Ex-Twitter Engineer

How I Saved a Twitter Engineer's Life

Let me tell you a little story. So there is this guy who works at X, who I met when I took over. Classic tech background, went to Stanford and studied Compsci etc…stayed in the Bay Area after graduation and took a job at Snapchat. His full time job was to make meaningless code base changes to small parts of the Snapchat camera filters feature. He was pretty bored and so he started looking for stuff to do outside work. Got into Yoga, as well as hiking around that park near the Golden Gate Bridge a lot. He loved getting $9 lattes from Cafe Trieste in the middle of the day. Eventually he moved over to Twitter under Parag. His full time job at Twitter was to make meaningless changes to the Twitter Profile picture feature. At this point, he got pretty deep into SoulCycle and was going to 2 $40 classes a day (during the work day). So anyway, he kinda trudges along like this in misery for a while. Eventually, I take over Twitter, and I almost fire this guy. However, I recognized he had some potential because he owned a Tesla. I put him in charge of X Spaces. He is now working 18 hour days and hasn’t seen his family in over 6 weeks. He sleeps in a sleeping bag on the 4th floor. He is absolutely crushing it, and Spaces is exploding. He finally has meaning in his life. This is exactly what we look for in our employees and I am incredibly proud that I was able to turn his miserable existence around. Congratulations!
